Overview
When a shape sherd under analysis is not suficiently preserved to determine the vessel shape it is described with a series of rim, base or handle codes. The rim codes emphasize the rim characteristics. These tend to be general and used for more than one horizon. Bases are categorized by a series of base codes which also tend to be used for more than one horizon. Bases through time gradually become more articulated and therefore there are many more base codes for the Mittani shapes than were for the Early Dynastic shapes. In the rare instances that handles are present they are described with a series of codes based on the handle shape.
A full list of codes and their descriptions are given on the shapes code.
